Our company begins its existence from cooperation with Wanda Rutkiewicz. Together with her, we created the first set of expeditionary clothing. Thus we expanded the offer to expedition sleeping bags. We have been developing this product segment for 30 years. Therefore, designing the EDGE series was very important to us. Expedition products should be primarily comfort - not only thermal. We wanted to prepare products that will also work well during those less frosty trips. When designing products for the Expedition series, we also tried to solve the problem of moisture management, interior space, modularity and additional amenities needed during long expeditions.

SHAPE: OWAL

Oval is a shape that offers a lot of comfort and space inside the sleeping bag. It focuses on integrating all construction components. The hood is component of the main shell, and not a separate component of the structure, as in most sleeping bags. Therefore, by using an oval outline, we gain a lot of space around the head and chest.

PROFILE: BOX

Box is a profile in which the sides are formed by a separate component. This is a very comfortable profile. We use it in warmer sleeping bags where comfort is essential.

CUT: LOOSE

To facilitate comparison, we distinguished three fits: snug, regular and loose.

LAYERS TYPE: CROSS BAFFLES

Cross baffles two layers of H-shaped baffles run perpendicularly. This structure allows for double insulation and virtually eliminates heat loss at the seams. Its advantage focuses on increasing comfort in specific areas of the body.

BAZ was supposed to be, above all, a comfortable and warm sleeping bag. From the beginning, it was designed to provide the best possible regeneration. While working on BAZ, we have come up with unusual solutions to achieve this. Testing equipment requires knowing what needs to be improved as well as what is performing well. When creating a new product, a lot of ideas are born. The tests allow you to verify the solutions that have been developed in our studio, to direct further work, but also to confirm our intuition. Giving the new product into the hands of our partners is always accompanied by a feeling of uncertainty. In the case of such an unusual sleeping bag as BAZ, that feeling was particularly strong.

WORK WITH PARTNERS

The first version of BAZ had 400g of down filling and it was delivered to our ambassador Marcin Wernik (Wernix) over a year ago. He used it as a light alpine sleeping bag. We wanted to verify whether the upper zipper allows stretching arms and whether the oval, box-like design will pass the test in the field. The version that Marcin got practically did not resemble the final version of BAZ, but it confirmed that the new design made sense. However, almost everything could be improved. The shape of the baffles, thermal solutions, moisture management etc.

Based on the knowledge from the first test, we developed most of the solutions that complement the original concept. There is a hybrid shell, improved baffle design, additional cross baffles, new slats, two collars around the face. Additionally we had the opportunity to test this almost final version of BAZ in a thermo-climatic chamber. It was a very comfortable solution. Piotr Marczewski from Oswajamy żywioły took the BAZ800 from -20 to -150 degrees. It was completely safe and the test results were recorded with a thermal imaging camera. It is hard to imagine a better situation for an expedition sleeping bag test. It was clear that we managed to virtually eliminate heat losses on the structure and on the zipper. It turned out, however, that the slat and zipper system did not work in such conditions. It was jamming and difficult to handle. Thanks to cooperation with Piotrek, we managed to eliminate this problem.

FURTHER TESTS

In addition to the improved zipper, the next versions also had an extended zone with a membrane, a more intuitive pocket layout and refined details. We invited more people to cooperate. Valerjan Romanovski - a Guinness record holder, winter swimmer, Kuba Woźniak - an expert in outdoor equipment, the editor of Magazyn Na Szczycie and our ambassador Jakub Rybicki - Stories told with vision- a traveler, explorer and phenomenal photographer.

REINVENT WHEEL

BAZ is different from a classic sleeping bag. We decided to ask again the question of what is actually crucial for comfort while sleeping in a sleeping bag. This is a question that a brand with thirty years of experience does not ask itself, because the answer is the knowledge it accumulates. However, we did not want to reach for known solutions and work on their improvement. We wanted to investigate the problem from scratch. This is how BAZ was created. A unique sleeping bag which functionality focuses on the comfort in base camp. It is distinguished primarily by the outline, design, location of the zipper and solutions improving thermal comfort.

FUNCTIONALITY OF FORM

We believe that the simplest solutions are the best. That is why we designed a perfectly justified form, which is a tribute to the design minimalism. Owal is an innovative approach to the construction of a sleeping bag. We simplified all its elements to the geometric shape of two connected circles. One is at the bottom of the sleeping bag and forms the bottom. The second one allowed us to integrate the hood with the whole structure, departing from the classic structure where the hood is a separate element. It is a form that provides a large and comfortable space, and at the same time, thanks to its simplicity, allows the structure to be kept very low on weight.

SPACIOUS FORM

BAZ is a sleeping bag, which was primarily intended to provide convenience and thermal comfort. Therefore, despite the common outline with the ultralight OXY sleeping bag, we used a completely different construction. First, its cross-section is box-shaped. This means that the sides are a separate element of the structure. They make the sleeping bag spacious and increase thermal comfort. Secondly, the BAZ is wider, because we wanted it to be a comfortable sleeping bag.

COMFORT FIRST AND FOREMOST

BAZ is a sleeping bag dedicated to anyone who needs a comfortable sleeping bag. We wanted it to provide the most comfortable camping possible, because it is the basis for regeneration on every trip. It is so spacious that you can change clothes in it. But despite this, thanks to a number of design solutions, it does not reduce thermal comfort. Therefore, it is an ideal sleeping bag for high mountain base camps, for polar explorers and bushcraft lovers.

TIGHT ZIPPER

The thermal comfort in the BAZ sleeping bag consists of a number of solutions. One of them is, of course, the shape of the sleeping bag itself. However, it is not the only thing responsible for comfort. A very important solution is to move the zipper to the edge above the head. Its location and the vertical climashield strips allowed us to reduce the heat loss within the zipper practically to zero. This was confirmed by tests with a thermal imaging camera in a thermoclimatic chamber, where the temperature ranged between - 60 and -150 degrees.

BAFFLESE

An important place for thermal comfort is a system of zone-specific cells. Most of the construction space of the BAZ sleeping bag is classic H-chambers. However, in two key zones for human thermoregulation, we applied additional design solutions. There are three rebuilt chambers around the head, which thanks to this changed shape protect the head from both sides and from the textbook, as well as an irregular collar. It is a very important solution with such an extensive hood and the lack of a traditional customer. The second zone where we changed the cellular structure is the cage area, which is a key area for our thermoregulation. We have added additional links there, cross joint construction.

THERMAL CONTROL

The whole spectrum of solutions improving thermal performance is complemented by a high, external Climashield collar. The puller allows you to adjust its circuit and thus the temperature. However, thanks to the rigid structure provided by Climashield, the collar limits heat loss even when it is fully open. Additionally, the temperature can be regulated by a zipper in the bottom. Ventilation in the feet is one of the most effective ways to let off some heat. The zipper is covered with a Climashield strip in the same way as the main zipper so it does not contribute to heat loss.

ZIPPER WITH MANY FUNCTIONS

The unique position of the zipper translates not only into thermal benefits. Two sliders are located at the ends of the zipper. After unzipping, you can easily free your hands. Thanks to this, you will be able to cook, hold the phone and perform other activities without leaving your sleeping bag. After opening the entire zipper, it is very easy to get into the sleeping bag. And in warmer conditions, you can lie down comfortably with an uncovered chest.

HYBRID SHELL

A very important element of the BAZ sleeping bag is the hybrid shell. On any trip, moisture is a very serious problem. Covering the entire sleeping bag with a membrane significantly reduces its breathability, which makes it difficult to dry during longer trips. That's why we've covered key places - the head, feet and bottom of the sleeping bag. There are areas of contact that are most exposed to contact with water. The large front surface is made of light and very breathable PEREX QUANTUM fabric. This combination allows a very good moisture management.

DETAIL

The whole project is completed with details. We have placed two zipped pockets on the sides of the chest so that their weight does not interrupt while you are asleep. There is a reflective patch with our logo next to the pocket, which will help you find it. We have brought the hood opening adjustment inside, so you do not have to stretch your arms outside to use it. We have prepared a special elastic pocket for the excess of the puller. BAZ1 has a new YKK zipper to prevent clipping of the loose fabric. The zipper is equipped with double-sided non-stopping sliders that facilitate unzipping. Each zipper has a black and white string from a Polish manufacturer. Outside, we sewed four pullers also made in Poland.

BAZ was filled with high-quality down. It is available in two fillings: 700 cuin and 800 cuin down. Thanks to over thirty years of experience in working with down, we know how to use the advantages of this unusual insulator.
