DOWN AND ITS FEATURES

DOWN-FEATURES

1.

THE BEST
INSULATOR

A down "cluster" is a soft and fluffy three dimensional structure with many filaments growing in all directions. One down cluster may consist of about 2 million filaments. As a result, the down feathers intertwine with each other, creating an insulating layer that accumulates the heat we generate. In this way, down products form a kind of thermos with us inside. All synthetic insulation works similarly, trying to imitate the effect of down, but despite the presence of a huge amount of synthetics, down remains unrivaled in terms of thermal comfort to lightness and fill power.

2.

EXTREME
FILL POWER

There is no insulator in the world with a better weight-to-thermal comfort ratio. A down jacket, compared to a synthetic one with identical warmth parameters, will be several times lighter, thanks to the vast fill power of down. About 2 grams of goose down is enough to fill a liter of space. The basic measure of down quality is its fill power, expressed in one of two units – CUIN compliant with the European standards and FP with the American standards.

COMPRESSION

One of the phenomena of down is its compressibility. Each down product can be packed in a very small transport bag or compression bag. After unpacking, our down will easily regain volume and thermal properties. However, you have to be aware of the fact that it will take some time to return to its full properieties.

4.

DURABILITY

Another advantage of down is its durability, which is estimated at at least 10 cycles. Of course, it depends on the method of use and the type of product, but we can be sure that it is several times more durable than synthetic filling. Remember, however, that if down is going to take care of you, you have to take care of it.

NOT RESISTANT
TO MOISTURE

What down can't handle is moisture. When soaking wet, it loses its volume, and thus its insulating properties. Against the odds, when it dries, it regains all its properieties. If, in the environment in which we intend to venture, the risk of frequent contact with moisture is high, we can partially protect the down with a membrane, use hydrophobic down or opt for synthetic filling.
